Kolahoi Glacier Trek

Kolahoi Glacier Trek might be a classic Kashmir trek that takes us through lush green valleys, shady forest slopes fed by gushing streams, into an alpine meadow landscape and amazing views of the Himalayas all around. Kolahoi glacier is one among the longest glaciers in Jammu and Kashmir and within the past it extended for a minimum of 35 km. within the Pleistocene there are three advances of Kolahoi glacier and the last one among them was a serious advance when the glacier extended as far as Pahalgam. Kolahoi glacier being the large one of the Glaciers of the valley has its unique position.

The melt-water stream of Kolahoi glacier is understood because the West Liddar River that joins the East Liddar River originating from Shesnag Lake at Pahalgam (35 km from the snout). The river Liddar merges with main river ‘Jhelum’ at village gur, Anantnag after traveling a course of about 70 km from Kolahoi to gur.

Kolahoi glacier is about 5 km long and it flows from the north-west of a neve field covering about 35 km. At one end of this neve, the sector is that the north-eastern cirque of Kolahoi Horn. This neve field also feeds 3 other glaciers. The easternmost of those flows northward and its meltwater enters the Sind River. the opposite 2 terminate within the hanging valley glaciers along the eastern wall of Kolahoi glacier. The Cirque on the north-western face of Kolahoi Horn feeds a dangling valley glacier which descends along the southern valley wall and therefore the cirque on the southern face of Kolahoi Horn feeds a glacier which melts before it descends to the Aru Valley.
